Dr Hayden is Stuart S. Richardson Professor Emeritus of Clinical Virology and Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Virginia University School of Medicine, Charlottesville. He received his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine (1973). He joined the faculty of Virginia University (1978), became Richardson Professor (1990), and subsequently transitioned to emeritus status (2015). His principle research interests have been on respiratory viral infections with a particular focus on the development and application of antiviral agents. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and reviews, and co-edits the textbook Clinical Virology, the fourth edition of which was published by the American Society for Microbiology Press in 2017. He continues to serve as a consultant to WHO on influenza and emerging viral infections.
