COURSE DETAILS

The School of Influenza was open to motivated students working in the influenza virus field.

It was ideal for those starting their scientific career and those working in local health organisations, governmental departments and non-governmental organisations. Young scientists were particularly encouraged to participate.

The main objective of the School of Influenza was to provide an introduction to the influenza virus and many aspects of influenza virus surveillance, research, public health issues and preventative measures.

The curriculum was organised into 4 and a half days of lessons, presentations and discussion sessions, for a total of 30 hours, from Monday 11 April to Friday 15 April 2016, and was designed to emphasise: the biology and molecular biology of host-pathogen interactions; the host immune response to infection associated with protection or pathology; ecology; the evolution and transmission of virus; methods of laboratory-based surveillance; the epidemiology of the influenza virus and the use of vaccines and antivirals.

The course focused on the following subjects:

  • Societal impact
  • Global influenza surveillance and prevention
  • Human and animal influenza
  • Pathogenesis
  • Immunology
  • Vaccines
  • Antivirals
  • Regulatory Issues

The afternoon of Thursday 14 April focussed on "Pandemic preparedness" and included a workshop led by faculty members.

In the morning of Friday 15 April three world-renowned guests gave talks on the current state of art in influenza research.

Three afternoon sessions were devoted to the students who wished to present their current research.

After full attendance (100% of lectures) of the course the University of Siena provided a certificate of participation in the "Corso di formazione in influenza"
