Ralf Wagner
Acting Head, Viral Vaccine Section, Paul-Ehrlich- Institute, Langen, Germany

Ralf Wagner (PhD) studied Human Biology at the University in Marburg, Germany and graduated in 1992. Already in his Diploma and Doctoral thesis he turned to the field of influenza virus research at the Institute of Virology at Marburg University in the group of Prof. Klenk. He received his PhD in 1996. During his postdoc years at the Marburg institute his primary objectives were the identification of pathogenicity determinants of influenza and paramyxoviruses which he studied using reverse genetics systems.

In 2004 he moved to the Viral Vaccine Section at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute, which is the German federal institute for vaccines and Biomedicines. He is currently the acting head of the viral vaccines section with his main tasks being devoted to human vaccine regulation such as licensing, life-cycle management and official batch release testing for market supply. Most of this work is conducted at the European level in cooperation with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL) network.

In parallel to his regulatory functions he is also heading a laboratory group dedicated to applied research in the field of efficacy determination of influenza vaccines. A special focus of his research group is the detection of antibody responses directed against the viral hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins by HA inhibition, neutralization and ELLA-assay. He is member of the CONSISE network and work package leader within the FLUCOP project.
