Professor Maria Zambon, BSc Biochemistry PhD Virology MRC National Institute of Medical Research; BSC.BM BCh (Oxford), FRCPath, F Med Sci, is medically and scientifically qualified Director of UK national reference laboratories including scientific/medical/technical staff involved in national microbiology reference laboratory provision, public health and epidemiology surveillance, outbreak response and integrated clinical research programmes. Head of UK national influenza centre and scientific respiratory virus group, directing longstanding programmes on respiratory virus diagnostics, antivirals, vaccines and other interventions for treatment of serious respiratory infections. Clinical and laboratory response role for emerging respiratory infections eg SARS and MERS CoV.

Significant individual contribution to UK and international policy on pandemic planning for influenza. Main research interests vaccine development, viral diagnosis, molecular epidemiology, antivirals for RNA viruses. Author of over 300 peer review publications on influenza and other respiratory viruses. Scientific and/or medical lead for several multicentre/multinational R and D collaborations. Professional lead for Public Health England national respiratory programmes and member of the WHO IHR Emergency Committee.
