Olav Hungnes Virologist & Head of the Influenza Laboratory / National Influenza Centre, Department of Virology, Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Oslo, Norway

Olav Hungnes (PhD) is a virologist and the head of the Influenza laboratory / National Influenza Centre in the Department of Virology, NIPH. Originally a cell biologist, he started to work in virology on molecular mechanisms in HIV-1 replication back in the late 80’s, and completed his Ph.D. on this topic in 1992.
He began to work on molecular diagnostics and molecular epidemiology of influenza viruses in 1996 and took over as Director of the National Influenza Centre in Oslo in 1999. During 2004-2014, he was heading a Task Group on molecular diagnosis and sequence analysis within the European Reference Laboratory Network for Human Influenza (ERLI-Net). 
He is a member of the WHO PCR Working Group for Influenza and the Coordination Committee for the Consortium for Standardisation of Influenza Seroepidemiology /CONSISE).
