Masato Tashiro

Dr. Tashiro obtained his medical degree in 1975 from Tohoku University, Sendai. After 2-year’s internship of internal medicine, he studied molecular pathogenesis of Sendai virus and measles virus infections at Yamagata University. He extended his study to the pathogenesis and animal-human interface of influenza 1984-1987 at University of Giessen, Germany. He held Associate Professor at Virology Department, Jichi Medical School. He was invited to Director of Virology, National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), Japan, in 1994. He then moved to Director of Department of Viral Diseases and Vaccine Control and Influenza Virus Research Center, NIID, in 2009.
Since 2001 he has directed the WHO’s Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza and the Essential Regulatory Laboratory, Tokyo, of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS). He is also Director of WHO SARS Reference Laboratory and H5N1 Research Network. He has contributed, as a board member and advisor, to many national/international scientific societies and governmental organizations.
