Dr Marilda Mendonca Siqueira, a Titular Researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is Head of the Respiratory Virus Laboratory, the WHO National Influenza Centre and the WHO Measles Regional Reference laboratory. Her research is principally concerned with influenza and measles/rubella; her group also focuses on the education and training of various MSc and PhD students. She is a consultant for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Ministry of Health, Brazil, and has participated in many influenza and measles/rubella working groups and committees at WHO. She was a treasurer of the Brazilian Society for Virology.

Dr Siqueira is a member of the Brazilian National Committee for Influenza Pandemic Preparedness and the National Committee for Measles and Rubella Elimination, and was a member of the National Committee for SARS Preparedness and Response. She has been the principal author or co-author of Ministry of Health Manuals and Guidelines for the Influenza Surveillance and the Measles/Rubella Elimination programs.

Dr Siqueira co-organised the highly successful inaugural conference of the isirv Antiviral Group (AVG) on Influenza Antivirals: Efficacy and Resistance in Rio de Janeiro in November 2011, with a special focus on Latin America. She is a member of the isirv-AVG Committee and as an active representative of South America, Dr Siqueira would broaden the geographical representation of the Board.

Dr Siqueira received the highly prestigious Willian H Foege Award for Outstanding Public Health Intervention in 2002.
