Jonathan Van-Tam graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 1987 and after gaining clinical experience, underwent formal training in academic public health medicine in the UK. He became a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nottingham in 1997, before joining the pharmaceutical industry as an Associate Director at SmithKline Beecham, then Head of Medical Affairs at Roche, and finally UK Medical Director at Aventis Pasteur MSD. He moved to the UK Health Protection Agency in 2004, where he was Head of the Pandemic Influenza Office, and returned to Nottingham in late 2007 as Professor of Health Protection, maintaining throughout his special interest in influenza: epidemiology; transmission; vaccinology; and pandemic preparedness which now spans over 22 years. He has published 110 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and is co-Editor of the textbook: Introduction to Pandemic Influenza, now in second edition. He has been a consultant to the World Health Organization since 2004. He sits on the UK Scientific Pandemic Influenza Committee (SPI), and sat on the UK Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) during the 2009-10 pandemic crisis. His unit is an official WHO Collaborating Centre for pandemic influenza and research, a UK Faculty of Public Health “national treasure” training location and a Public Health England Field Epidemiology training centre.
