Dr Janet Daly

The focus of Dr Daly’s research is on RNA viruses, in particular, their epidemiology and evolution and the development and testing of vaccines and diagnostic tests for influenza A viruses. Janet has been involved in the development and application of new methods to measure immune responses to infection and vaccination in ‘neglected’ species such as the horse. Janet has extensive experience of strain surveillance of equine influenza A viruses gained while a PhD student at the Animal Health Trust. She continues to work with researchers from around the world on canine and equine influenza surveillance.
In collaboration with mathematical modellers, Janet has been involved in the development of models to predict the likelihood of vaccine breakdown and occurrence of outbreaks in equine populations. In the field of human influenza, Janet studied the genetic and immunological safety of DNA vaccines at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control and she was involved in studying neuraminidase inhibitors of influenza at GSK. Identification of transmission of equine influenza virus to foxhounds in the UK ignited an interest in understanding molecular and cellular pathogenesis, host range restrictions and transmissibility. More recently, Janet has extended these studies to influenza D viruses.
Michael Ison, Northwestern University, USA
Dr Ison became involved in influenza during his fellowship at the University of Virginia in 2001 and much of his research career has been devoted to developing new approaches to the prevention and treatment of influenza in the hospitalized and immunocompromised adult. In addition to significant involvement in the development of a number of approved and currently investigational antivirals, Dr Ison has also conducted epidemiology studies to define the contemporary presentation, clinical course and outcomes of hospitalized adults with a range of respiratory viruses, including influenza, RSV and parainfluenza virus. He is an active contributor to the IDSA and WHO influenza treatment guidelines.
Dr Ison was Chair of Options IX for the Control of Influenza, Chicago 2016. He is the current co-Chair of the ISIRV Antiviral Group and the Chair of the ISIRV Scientific Meetings Committee
Lance Jennings, Clinical Virologist, Canterbury Health Laboratories (retired) and
Associate Professor, Pathology Department, University of Otago, New Zealand
ISIRV Past-Chair (2013-2019)
He has been instrumental in the development of influenza control strategies for New Zealand, including the introduction of free influenza vaccine, establishment of influenza awareness education (NISG) and pandemic planning. His research interests focus on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of influenza and other respiratory virus infections. He co-founded in 2002 the Asia Pacific Alliance for the Control of Influenza (APACI), a Charitable Trust, and is a Director and the immediate past-Chair. He was the Chair of ISIRV for the period 2013 - 2019 and is currently chairing the ISIRV Governance Committee.
Dr Jennings has been a member of WHO/WPRO Avian Influenza Outbreak Response and Expert Influenza teams in Asia and has held WHO short-term consultancies on measles and influenza in Asia and Europe. He serves on several Ministry of Health and PHARMAC technical advisory groups, and is on the editorial board of the International Society for Influenza and other Respiratory Virus Disease (ISIRV) journal Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses. In 2006 he was appointed as a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order in recognition of his service to virology in New Zealand and internationally.
