Mario Melgar is a pediatric infectious diseases specialist who heads the Infectious Diseases divisions at the 200-bed Department of Pediatrics of Hospital Roosevelt, the largest referral hospital in Guatemala, and also heads the Infectious Diseases Deparment at the 45-bed specialized Unit for Pediatric Oncology in Guatemala, the only pediatric oncologic unit in the country. Mario Melgar also directs the only Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship in Guatemala. 

Mario Melgar has over 5 years of experience in conducting clinical trial and epidemiological research on common infectious diseases in children. From immunogenicity and safety studies of meningococcal and polio vaccines, to more recently studies to evaluate the epidemiology of S. pneumoniae infections in hospitalized children at the hospital. 

In addition to his research and clinical experience, Mario Melgar is a member of the National Commission for Immunization Practices of Guatemala and currently the President of the Infectious Diseases Society of Guatemala. During his research career, he has focused on systems to improve the detection and control of infectious diseases among immuno-compromised children with cancer in Guatemala. Mario Melgar established a very comprehensive surveillance system to evaluate hospital acquired infections and prevent their transmission in this vulnerable population. He has conducted some quality control studies to evaluate hand-hygiene as well as monitoring influenza and currently involved in a project to evaluate the efficacy of chlorhexidine vs. transparent dressings in the prevention of central line infections

In the field of respiratory viruses,Mario Melgar has conducted several surveillance studies in his hospital. Recently, he coordinated a review of the type of Influenza vaccine recommended for his country (northern vs southerh hemisphefere) which lead to the recommendation of changing our vaccine used to northern hemisphere.
